Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away
For lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone,
The flowers appear upon the earth,
The time of the singing of birds is come.
Words from Song of Solomon
SATB, a cappella

The text of this piece is part of the breathless Biblical love song called The Song of Solomon, written as a four-part alternative to Healy Willan’s beautiful six-part setting of the same text. By lucky chance, its completion fell near my friends Mark and Jennifer Dietrich’s first anniversary, so it became a gift for them.
Although clearly a love lyric, the piece programs well in any concert about spring. The performance should have a feeling of rubato throughout, always in service to an intimate and tender expression of the text. The alto part may by sung by the right tenor, if it proves too low for the altos at hand.
