This piece was written to honor Dr. Catherine Roma, on the occasion of her retirement from the leadership of MUSE, Cincinnati’s Women’s Choir. Her family chose this spiritual because of the significance that it had had in Cathy’s life and career. Here is what she says about it:

“My Lord What a Morning” resounds deep in my soul. I sang Harry Burleigh’s arrangement long ago; it is one of my earliest memories of a spiritual that transcended time and space and shook me to the core. I conducted it with high school students in Philadelphia as part of a program to make Dr. King’s birthday a holiday at Bright Hope Baptist Church. It was one of the first pieces I conducted with the Martin Luther King Chorale in Cincinnati. Its beauty, light and joy for a new day re-assures us that hope is here and beyond the stars that fall.”

Description

Refrain:
My Lord, what a morning!
My Lord, what a morning!
Oh, my Lord, what a morning
when the stars begin to fall.

1. Oh, you will hear the trumpet sound
to wake the nations underground,
Looking to my Lord’s right hand
when the stars begin to fall.

2. Oh, you will hear the sinner shout,
‘Cause there’s a new day come about,
Looking to my Lord’s right hand
When the stars begin to fall
