This Song of Mine

Music is the language of memory. Tagore’s poem describes the way that music resides in the heart as blessing, companion, inspiration, and strength throughout the life of the listener. I wrote this setting for the 50th anniversary season of the Master Singers of Milwaukee, and I imagined it as a love letter from the chorus to the audiences that they have had over a half century of concerts.

The style of the solo was suggested by the singing of Arooj Aftab, a Pakistani-American singer that I was listening to on repeat during the writing of this piece.

Description

This song of mine will wind its music around you,
like the fond arms of love.

This song of mine will touch your forehead
like a kiss of blessing.

When you are alone, it will sit by your side
and whisper in your ear, when you are in a crowd
it will gather you in to quiet solitude.

My song will be like a pair of wings to your dreams,
it will transport your heart to the verge of the unknown.

It will be like the faithful star overhead
when dark night is over your road.

My song will sit in the pupils of your eyes,
and will carry your sight into the heart of things.

And when my voice is silenced in death,
my song will sing in your living heart.

~Rabindranath Tagore (adapt. JDM)
